Application Essay A real love of ideas begins when students stop doing only what they are good at and realize that through practice they can discover new worlds of understanding and joy. Being a good learner does not require that you keep doing everything without any regard to whether you enjoy it; pleasure must emerge as an essential dimension to those areas to which we devote ourselves. Yet even when you love something at first and are drawn to it, devotion sustains you when it becomes difficult and forbidding. We know that people love to read when they are first defeated by a book, and then reread it to see what they missed. This could also be a good opportunity to seek out leadership positions to gain valuable experience that also looks good on college applications. We need to dispense with platitudes such as “Learning is fun,” and instead admit that learning is often painful. This has been a source of great concern, especially among students preparing for top-tier universities that emphasize leadership and creativity outside the classroom. Colleges recognize that the challenges of distance learning may result in evaluations that do not accurately portray a prospective student’s potential. As such, many admissions committees are weighing grades earned during COVID-19 less heavily or not factoring them into their decisions at all. Some universities, such as those in the UC system, have temporarily suspended the letter grade requirement for spring 2020 courses. This form is used to apply for federal financial aid for college, career schools, or graduate school. Juniors may want to narrow their focus on colleges where they might apply. Seniors can use the college fair to make connections at schools where they are applying. Students should be sure they are choosing the type of school that will help them achieve their goals. If you would like to take a tour, talk to an admissions counselor, stay overnight in a residence hall or visit a class, make the proper arrangements through the admissions office. Once you’ve settled on a selection, it’s time to take note of any and all application deadlines and get organized so you can hit the ground running by the time fall rolls around. Getting real-world experience before college is a valuable addition to any high schooler’s resume.
